Community Based skills Development

1. Introduction

Man is a social animal. He has a natural urge to live an associated life with others. Man needs society for his existence or survival. The human child depends on his parents and others for its survival and growth. The inherent capacities of the child can develop only in society. The ultimate goal of society is to promote good and happy life for its individuals. It creates conditions and opportunities for the all round development of individual personality. Society ensures harmony and cooperation among individuals in spite of their occasional conflicts and tensions. If society helps the individuals in numerous ways, great men also contribute to society by their wisdom and experience. Thus, society and individuals are bound by an intimate and harmonious bond and the conflicts between the two are apparent and momentary. In a well-ordered society, there would be lasting harmony between the two.

2. Society

The term “society” means relationships social beings.. Society liberates and limits the activities of men and it is a necessary condition of every human being and need to fulfillment of life. Society is a system of usages and procedures of authority and mutual aid many divisions of controls of human behavior and of liberties. Society exists only where social beings “behave” toward one another in ways determined by their recognition of one another. It should be clear that society is not limited to human beings. There are many degrees of animal societies, likely the ants, the bee, the hornet, are known to most school children. It has been contended that wherever there is life there is society, because life means heredity and, so far as we know each member seeks something and gives something. A society can also consist of likeminded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant.  A society may be illustrated as an economic, social or industrial infrastructure, made up of a varied collection of individuals.
Finally, we can say that the word “society” may also refer to an organized voluntary association of people for religious, benevolent, cultural, scientific, political, patriotic or other purposes.

3. Man Is a Social Animal

Aristotle expressed that “Man is essentially a social animal by nature”. He cannot live without society, if he does so; he is either beast or God. Man has to live in society for his existence and welfare. In almost all aspect of his life he feels the need of society. Biologically and psychologically he compelled to live in society. Man can never develop his personality, language, culture and “inner deep” by living outside the society.
Society fulfills all his needs and provides security. Every human took birth, grows, live and die in society. Without society human’s life is just like fish out of water. Hence there exists a great deal of close relationships between man and society. Both are closely inter-related, interconnected and inter-dependent. Relationship between the two is bilateral in nature.

Man Lives in Society for His Mental and Intellectual Development

Society not only fulfils his physical needs and determines his social nature but also determines his personality and guides the course of development of human mind. Society molds our attitudes, beliefs, morals, ideals and thereby molds individual personality. Man acquires a self or personality only living in a society. From birth to death individual acquires different social qualities by social interaction with his fellow beings which molds his personality.    With the help of social heritage man’s in born potentialities are unfolded. Thus, from the above discussion we conclude that Man is a social animal. His nature and necessities makes him a social being. He also depends on society to be a human being. He acquires personality within society. There exists a very close relationship between individual and society like that of cells and body.

The role of society in an  individual development:

Education development

The role of education in daily life as well as society is very important and leaves a great impact on the overall progress of society. Education is the only area which is equally important to each and every person of the society.Education is the ultimate pathway of success. It gives a great deal of support and encourages each and every individual. The stunning fact is that education is given the highest place in today’s world. Basically, education is a process of continuous learning which should be continued till life ends.
One should learn to live a decent life, a life which may promote knowledge and awareness to society or individuals. To acquire education is a fundamental right of each and every individual. Education should be imparted to all without any discrimination. It is an essential commodity like food, clothing, and shelter.

Education is the ultimate factor that provides employment, so it plays a vital role in the development of the country and also in raising the per capita income of the country. Education is the best weapon to eradicate poverty.
  • It keeps the people away from superstitious beliefs.
  • It is the only pathway to maintain success in life.
  • It increases the ethical values of the person.
  • Education is not only learning about books but also learning about how to live life.
It rapidly increases your skill and awareness. An educated person will identify the difference between good and bad.

Women's Development:

Women have made dramatic advances in all
 the feilds.

Economic growth

Since economic growth changes the way personality characteristics are valued by a nation, it is possible that the growth process itself can alter the future growth prospects of a nation, because some personality characterizes are apt to be growth fostering, while others are likely to be growth inhibiting.

Culture and cultural development :

Culture is often referred to as a blueprint or guideline shared by a group of people that specifies how to live. It includes ideas about what is right and wrong, what to strive for, what to eat, how to speak, what is valued, as well as what kinds of emotions are called for in certain situations. Culture teaches us how to live in a society and allows us to advance because each new generation can benefit from the solutions found and passed down from previous generations. What, and how, we eat is often determined by our culture.

Culture is learned from parents, schools, churches, media, friends and others throughout a lifetime. We tend to believe that our own culture’s practices and expectations are the right ones. Cultural relativity is an appreciation for cultural differences and the understanding that cultural practices are best understood from the standpoint of that particular culture.

Civilization development:

Ancient Indian civilization pioneered many of today's most important achievements. ... Most part of contributions made/ legacy by ancient civilizations – as writing system, ancient architecture, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy and medicine, and others.

Thus there is agreement on at least three major stages of societal development, or civilizations: the preagricultural (hunting and gathering) stage, the agricultural stage, and the industrial stage.

Industrial development:

The Industrial Revolution had many positive effects. Among those was an increase in wealth, the production of goods, and the standard of living. People had access to healthier diets, better housing, and cheaper goods. In addition, education increased during the Industrial Revolution.

Positive Effects of the Industrial Revolution:

The Industrial Revolution had many positive effects. Among those was an increase in wealth, the production of goods, and
the standard of living. People had access to healthier diets, better housing, and cheaper goods. In addition, education increased
during the Industrial Revolution.
Due in part to the
Edward Jenner’s invention of the smallpox vaccine and Louis Pasteur’s discovery of bacteria, health care increased, and people began to live longer. The middle and upper classes
benefited immediately from the Industrial Revolution. For workers, it took much longer. However during the 1800s, workers formed labor unions and gained higher wages and better working conditions. As a result, they began to see
the benefits of the Industrial Revolution as well.

Agricultural development:

When early humans began farming, they were able to produce enough food that they no longer had to migrate to their food source. This meant they could build permanent structures, and develop villages, towns, and eventually even cities. Closely connected to the rise of settled societies was an increase in population.
The agricultural revolution had a variety of consequences for humans. It has been linked to everything from societal inequality—a result of humans' increased dependence on the land and fears of scarcity—to a decline in nutrition and a rise in infectious diseases contracted from domesticated animals.

Positive:
There are more people because there is enough food. More ideas can be created and the population can become more diverse.

 Negative
More competition for space and resources.

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT:

Community development is important because it provides the foundation a city builds off of to improve the lives of its citizens. It creates strong, diverse communities that are able to attract and keep talent, start and grow businesses, and overcome issues that arise. Citizens will be happier, healthier, richer, and live longer lives. Businesses will have a larger base of customers who can purchase their products and services, and the city will earn tax income to continue to support important programs and reduce debt.
When community development is effective, there is less crime, less disparity between citizens, better jobs available, a more talented workforce, and less overall issues that impact residents. Community development doesn’t necessarily solve problems in a city; it reduces problems and increases opportunities for growth. Without community development, both economic and business development suffer greatly.

There are many ways to get involved, including:

• Attending a City Council meeting
• Volunteer to help at a local event hosted by the city
• Ask local representatives if they would be willing to go out for a cup of coffee to talk
• Serve on a Board
• Volunteer time for a Committee that helps with Community Development
• Volunteer to help people outside your usual circle of friends and influence
• Encourage others to be involved with local organizations

Role of individual for community development:

We have heard the fact a lot of time since our childhood that man is a social animal. The existence of man is futile without society, and hence the society was built. We here talk about a part of this society; the one where a person resides. Every individual is important and equally liable to some roles and responsibilities when living in a cultured society. The roles an individual plays are of a neighbor, an owner of the house or a tenant etc. The basic responsibilities of an individual are respect, cooperation, and participation. Is “a process where community members come together to take collective action and generate solutions to common problems.”

Let us discuss some of these responsibilities in detail.

Personal habits

1. These habits implemented individually would contribute to a better spiritual life, more valuable relationships and a healthier body and soul.

2. Meditation

Much has already been written about the short and long-term benefits of meditation, but what we can highlight as the most important is the reduction of stress and anxiety, it also improves memory and gives us more awareness about ourselves and our surroundings.
If you can make a big difference on a personal level, imagine if all the people you know will meditate.
The anxiety level of people on the street would drastically decrease, while their happiness would increase.

3. Physical and mental health

If each individual leads a healthier lifestyle, surely life expectancy would increase as people become aware of what is best for their body and mind.
I’m not saying that eating fast food or consuming sugar becomes illegal or something, but that each person has the necessary information to know what is beneficial for their body and what is not.

4.Learning

It is not a novelty that once they finish college most adults do not cultivate the habit of reading. But what would happen if it were the other way around? If each person read about topics that are interesting and continue to grow as the years go by.
This point doesn’t sound so farfetched by the fact that Internet access is almost universal today, but unfortunately, it is not the majority of the society that continues to learn with the only goal of knowing more.

5. .Hobbies and side hustles

Everyone has a favorite hobbie, but not everyone has the time or the motivation to carry it out regularly. It would be interesting if each person could do what they love in their free time.
Playing an instrument, creating web pages, practicing a sport, learning a new job are excellent ways to pass the time that if you have enough dedication could become the main activity of those who practice them.
What would contribute to their own happiness and who helps with their talent.

6. Relationship with money

Until now, the previous habits contribute enormously to greater happiness, and this last individual habit also does. That more and more people move away from senseless consumerism and adopt lifestyles close to minimalism would help society as a whole understand what is really important in life and that money and possessions are only resources that are only present for a moment in our lives.
Also, people must have an acceptable financial education so that they are able to save and invest in order to enjoy more of the fruits of their work.

SOCIAL HABITS:

1. Maintain A Clean Surrounding:

Every person is responsible for the cleanliness of his or her surroundings. One must always keep in mind to ensure that their homes as well as common premises are kept clean. Ask the servants to take care of this. Do not litter the place outside your door or the gardens or elevators. Use dustbins. Or ask for them to be installed at all possible places such as the corridors, garden, parking lot etc.

2. Participate In Society’s Activities:

Every individual is expected to take active part in all the important activities being held in the society. These activities may be the elections for vital positions of people to run the society smoothly, meetings to discuss important issues, recreational purposes etc. Here, elections and meetings are a must. They should be participated in, because every individual has something to offer to the improvement of the society. All the suggestions and complaints made on the right platform will yield the desired results. It is no use sulking in your own house and mutter complaints of the society to your family. Go out, talk to the respected people viz. general secretary. Also, taking part in recreational activities not only relieves one of stress but also helps maintain an amicable environment in the society.

3. Pay The Maintenance Charges Timely:

It is not unknown that everything costs money. Maintenance charges are an important fund and should not be taken as the society’s scheme to loot you. The money is utilized in the welfare of the society itself. To keep the surroundings clean, the genitors are to be paid. Electricity bills of the premises are to be paid out of this fund only. And the list goes on. Hence this should not be taken lightly and be paid on time.

4. Be In A Harmonious Relationship With neighborhood

Culture itself means to have certain values. The relationship of every individual with the neighbors should be friendly and healthy. Any disputes arising out of sharing the common spaces or parking spaces etc must be addressed in proper manner and on the proper platform like the society meetings. One should take care not to bicker around with neighbors. That is definitely not a part of a cultured society.

5. Follow the rules of a society:

Each society has certain rules defined. And every individual must respect and abide by them. In case any rule is proving difficult, it should be brought forward in the society meetings. Breaking them is no solution.
One must know that he or she is an integral part of a society’s well-being and conduct accordingly.

6. Relation between Individual and Society

Human cannot survive without society and societies cannot exist without members. Still there may be conflicts between the individual and society;. The relation between individual and society has been an interesting and a complex problem at the same time. It can be stated more or less that it has defied all solutions so far. No sociologist has been able to give a solution of the relation between the two that will be fully satisfactory and convincing by reducing the conflict between the two to the minimum and by showing a way in which both will tend to bring about a healthy growth of each other.

7.Utilitarianism

Utilitarianism promotes “the greatest amount of good for the greatest number of people.” When used in a sociopolitical construct, utilitarian ethics aims for the betterment of society as a whole. Utilitarianism is a reason-based approach to determining right and wrong, but it has limitations.

8. Justice as Fairness

Justice means giving each person what he or she deserves or, in more traditional terms, giving each person his or her due. … When such conflicts arise in our society, we need principles of justice that we can all accept as reasonable and fair standards for determining what people deserve..

9. The Idea of a Social Union

It is rather the collective activity of society that is to become the overall good of each of its members. So the just social union of social unions would define not an abolition of separation of labour but rather a way in which the activities of each can come to manifest themselves in ways that enrich all.

EDUCATION DEVELOPMENT IN INDIVIDUALS:

Need and importance of Community Services IN THE LIFE OF STUDENTS:

Engaging in community service provides students with the opportunity to become active members of their community and has a lasting, positive impact on society at large. Community service or volunteerism enables students to acquire life skills and knowledge, as well as provide a service to those who need it most. These are some of the common benefits of participating in a community service program:

1. Psychological benefits:
Volunteering increases overall life satisfaction and helps a student to feel good about oneself because he/ she is helping others. It can also help to decreases stress and ease depression.

2. Social benefits:
Volunteering engages students with the community, creates special bonds with the population being served, and increases social awareness and responsibility.
3. Cognitive benefits: Volunteering helps students enhance their personal knowledge, grow from new experiences, and develop better interpersonal communication skills.
Participating in community service not only makes a difference to the organization and people being served, but also makes a difference to every student’s career prospects. Participating in community service activities helps to enhance student resumes by allowing students to obtain work-related skills prior to graduation, builds good references for employers in regards to community involvement, and provides a forum to network with future potential employers. It also helps students develop civic and social responsibility skills and become more aware of what their community needs.

Types of community services:

The term community service refers to any act that is performed for the benefit of the community at large. Acts can range from a one-time effort to collect canned goods for the local food pantry to a weekly commitment to serve meals to the homeless. People do not receive financial compensation for their services, although a number of award programs exist to recognize the contributions of volunteers.
In many cases, community service is performed as part of a person’s membership in a social organization. Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts may volunteer to read to the elderly residents at a local nursing home or collect toys to distribute to needy children in the community

Community service may involve collecting canned goods for the local food pantry.
. Many people choose to volunteer as a way to meet other people with similar interests, much like how one might socialize at a nightclub or a sporting event. Volunteering can be a great way for retirees to remain active in their community. Stay at home parents often use volunteer work to keep their professional skills sharp during their break from the workforce.
Community service can include working for charitable organizations, such as Habitat for Humanity, that build homes for people in need.

Community service, while ideally a voluntary act, is sometimes required by schools as a condition for high school graduation. In addition to enhancing a student’s college application, studies have shown that teenagers who volunteer typically show improved academic performance. Under mandatory service arrangements, teenagers must complete a specified number of hours of supervised community service per semester. However, they are usually allowed to choose activities that best fit their own personal interests, such as singing in the church choir or helping to organize library books.
Donating spare change to local organizations is part of community service.

Community service may also be ordered as punishment for a crime. In the case of nonviolent offenders, such as people convicted of drunk driving, it may be ordered instead of jail time. For incarcerated inmates, community service is sometimes required as part of the prison’s rehabilitation program. Cleaning up trash, removing graffiti, planting trees, or building playground equipment while under the supervision of prison guards are common tasks performed under this type of arrangement.also offers B.Sc Agriculture program.

7. Conclusion

Society and individual are made mutually dependent and responsible and mutually complementary. The result is that society progresses well with the minimum possible restrictions on the individual. A very wide scope is given to the natural development of the energies of the individual in such a manner that in the end. Society will benefit the best by it. While society reaps the best advantage of the properly utilized and developed energies of the individuals, an attempt is made to see that the normal and sometimes even the abnormal weaknesses of the individuals have the least possible effect on the society. Spirit of service and duty to the society is the ideal of the individual and spirit of tolerance, broadmindedness and security of the individual is the worry of the society. There is no rigid rule to develop the individual in a particular pattern suitable to the rules of the society.
Society demands greater sacrifices from its greater individuals while the fruits of the works of all are meant equally for all. The general rule is: the higher the status and culture of the individual are, the lesser his rights are and the greater his duties are. A sincere attempt is made by the sociologists to bring to the minimum the clash between the individual and the society, so that there will be few psychological problems for the individual and the society both. The inherent capacities, energies and weaknesses of the individual are properly taken into account and the evolution of the relation between the two is made as natural as possible. Human values and idealism being given due respect, the development of the relation between the two is more or less philosophical.
